The antidote to the proliferation of push n’ play laptop ‘live’ sets in modern club techno, Karenn have been lugging pretty much their entire studio from gig to gig for the last few years, and the effort has certainly paid off.
Formed of mutant bass producers Blawan and Pariah, as Karenn, the duo explore the kind of relentless techno heaviness initially purveyed by Regis, Surgeon and others emanating from Birmingham’s House of God in the late ‘90s, albeit with an entirely contemporary vibe. As you’d expect, distortion, bass, and thundering cymbals figure heavily, but Karenn offers far more than a straight ahead dancefoor bang-a-thon; their towering, largely improvised live sets represent the absolute pinnacle of dystopian techno abandon.
